Will Genia is a Stingray!

It’s Official, Will Genia is a Stingray! Attending the opening Open Schoolboys game of the season at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Will Genia was happy to sign autographs and talk to the media as a Sunshine Coast Stingray.

Will, the current halfback for the Reds and the Wallabies chose to join the Stingrays side after a recent speaking engagement on the Sunshine Coast.  Will had his manager contact the Stingrays about the possibility of joining and that got the ball rolling.

Will is a fan of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle, “I love the fact that it’s a beautiful place, laid back lifestyle and reminds me a lot of back home in Papua New Guinea in that sense”.

The SCRU were more than happy to welcome Genia with open arms.  Stingrays Chairman Tony Riddle was shocked to receive the phone call from Genia’s manager.

“It was a great phone call to get, I mean its Will Genia and he was impressed with our set up and the Sunshine Coast Community enough that he wanted to become a part of it”

When quizzed on what the Genia  signing will do for the Stingrays coach John ‘Hoons’ Rangihuna was more than pleased.

“It’s not everyday you get the best halfback in Australia wanting to come to your club.  His presence in whatever capacity we see him will boost the whole group.”

Will is the first current Wallaby to join the Sunshine Coast representative team.  While players like Daniel Braid, Morgan Turinui, Caleb Ralph and Totai Kefu have had involvement with the organisation before, Genia is the first to commit to the Stingrays whilst still competing at the highest level.

Sadly this means there is little chance of Genia pulling on the Stingrays jersey any time soon however there is still the possibility that he may get a game late in the year depending on how the Reds go in the finals of the Super Rugby.

Even if Will does not manage to get a game for the Stingrays this season it gives every kid on the Sunshine Coast another reason to cheer him on when he plays for the Reds and Wallabies.
