Wallabies to share Coast with Lions

THE Sunshine Coast may well provide the secret ingredient needed for the Wallabies to defeat the British and Irish Lions when they clash on the rugby field later this year.

The Sunshine Coast Rugby Union has announced the Wallabies would utilise the AIS-accredited sporting and gym facilities at the University of the Sunshine Coast, along with Stockland Park, for a one-week training camp here in June, before the first Test.

"They're going to come to a place that I believe is God's best country," Sunshine Coast Rugby Union director Tony Riddle said. "The guys will be relaxed. They'll clear their heads.

"They've got fantastic things to do, and they'll be able to attack those Lions and take it out, I hope."

The Lions will be hoping that some of the Sunshine Coast magic will rub off on them as they will be in Noosa from June 30 until July 4, the week before the third and final Test.

The Wallabies' stay is a repeat of sorts of the Caloundra camps in the late 1990s under then-coach Rod McQueen, and local experts are confident it again will provide the defining magic needed for success.

"When you look back at it, in 1999 we won a World Cup and the lead-up to that was down at Caloundra," Mr Riddle said. "And we had a Wallabies side that went on and dominated and actually won against the Lions back in 2001.

"I guess that can all come back to training at Caloundra, so I hope his

tory repeats itself."

The latest camp eventuated after Wallabies coach Robbie Deans held a training session for rising local rugby stars early last year.

The rest, as they say, is history ... hopefully repeated history.
