The Lyrical (Karl Smith) has become a rising star of the music scene in the Sunshine Coast. The north coast has always been a hotbed for new talent in a variety of genres and the acoustic/hip-hop/reggae scene is now no exception to that tradition.
Following in the footsteps of Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Michael Franti and Xavier Rudd, The Lyrical reflects the ingenuity and musical aptitude it takes to be a great artist. The "Unique blend of beat-boxing meshed with folk guitar and socially conscious lyrics - City News" makes The Lyrical one of those artists who demand your attention.
With a string of festival appearances that include Island Vibes Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Big Day Out and Byron Bay Bluesfest, The Lyrical will be right at home headlining the inaugural Sunshine Coast Craft Beer and Cider Festival on November 25.
Sunshine Coast Stadium caught up with Karl to see what makes the Sunshine Coast one of his favourite places to play.
SCS: How long have you been playing music for and what can crowds expect when they see you hit the stage at CBF?
Karl: I have been playing music since I could tap on things with sticks. I fell in love with music a very long time ago (I think Disney Movies like The Lion King did it to me) back when I was still living in the Solomon’s Islands. Guess I was about 6 or 7.
I started playing guitar in high school, I was around 15 I think, and started busking as soon as I finished school at about 19. Been doing it professionally for about 7 years now.
SCS: You’ve had a bit of success in that time, gaining a lot of national airplay, taking out two number one spots on the Triple J Unearthed charts as well as receiving numerous accolades for your busking skills! What makes playing festival gigs so special?
Karl: Who knows? The people, the events, the like-minded good vibes all around you... maybe it's the sky?
There's always sky involved in a festival and that kind of makes it stand out to your average gig in a venue too!
SCS: The Sunshine Coast Craft Beer and Cider festival is bringing over 40 craft brewers along to showcase their skills at making the perfect beer or cider. Are you a craft beer or cider enthusiast and are there any brewers in particular that you look forward to tasting?
Karl: I’m not really an enthusiast... but I do like the old fashioned freezing cold beer after a big day! With that said, I'm ready to learn and keen to taste! Convert me!
SCS: If you could only pick beer or cider to drink for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Karl: Definitely beer. I can only ever drink one or two ciders.
SCS: What makes you look forward to playing to at Sunshine Coast Stadium?
Sunshine Coast have always been like a big family to us! The very first album I ever released was launched in the Sunshine Coast. The community there has been a massive part of shaping me and the boys as we are today, and I always look forward to performing there!
SCS: What does 2018 have install for you?
Karl: Well, we are heading to NZ for our first "Official" overseas tour! We are also finally releasing our full album, which I have been waiting almost 4 years to do! So yeah, we’re pretty excited about 2018
