Sunshine Coast Fire - Soccer's Big Future

The Sunshine Coast Fire FC is already blazing a trail towards establishing an A-League team to open up the local soccer scene to the national stage.

SC Fire technical director of coaching Melvyn Wilkes says the club has held several meetings with potential backers and the Sunshine Coast Council to build a case to put to the Football Federation Australia.

“This has been on the agenda for a number of years, but it’s come to fruition from early to mid-December and the momentum has gathered since then,” Wilkes says.

“We are at the point now where all parties have sat around the table and formed a way forwards and now it is a case of making sure that all the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed and then everybody is ready for when expansion is possible and we will be prepared to put our best possible foot forward.”

Wilkes says there were no Hyundai A-League team licences available at the moment, but “expansion is looking likely from the 2018/2019 season,” which begins at the end of next year.

With a strong club membership and the newly-revamped Sunshine Coast Stadium as their base, Wilkes says a national team based on the Sunshine Coast would be an all-round win for the region.

“It’d be a fantastic opportunity because it provides a pathway for our already successful young junior players to progress onto the national stage through A-League participation and it will give local spectators a chance to view elite level football from all of the different clubs that would be travelling to the Coast,” he says.
