Leading into their debut at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the countdown is on for the Australian Women’s Rugby 7s team to arrive for a week of intensive training at council’s Sunshine Coast Stadium.
After winning gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and already having won back-to-back World Series titles to start the year, the Australians are among the favourites to triumph on the Gold Coast.
Tourism, Events and Sport Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said the Sunshine Coast community had been loving the interaction that has been taking place with the 500 athletes and officials from nine countries as they went about their training preparations for the Commonwealth Games.
“The Australian Women’s Rugby 7s will receive the same warm welcome when they interact with the fans at the open training session for boys and girls under 21 from 3.30pm on April 10 at the region’s premier sporting venue Sunshine Coast Stadium,” Cr O’Pray said.
“We are really looking forward to hosting the Australian Women’s Rugby 7s team, adding the premier team to an ever-growing list of national and international athletes utilising the precinct to train and prepare for national and international fixtures.
“Young aspiring players are encouraged to not only take the opportunity to meet and test their talent against the Women’s 7s but also grab an autograph or a photo with the team on April 10.”
