Coach says Outlaw made too many mistakes in 22 all draw

IT WAS two in a row for the Northern Outlaws with the weekend's game a draw against the Nambour Crushers.

The combined Gympie and Noosa side showed it was of equal strength, with a 22-all draw in Round 2 of the Gympie Sunshine Coast Rugby League Division 1 competition.

Coach Anthony Zipf said the team did not play as well as last week, making too many mistakes in defence.

"We gave away too many opportunities," he said.

"The score probably shouldn't have been that close."

The Outlaws started well and stuck to their game plan but fell away about 15 minutes into the first half.

The game plan was to keep pressure on and avoid mistakes in their own half but dropped balls put the Outlaws on the back foot.

They were behind 8-6 at the end of the first half.

Zipf said two incredible tries, from Sam Young and Brock Dalgleish, kept the Outlaws in the game.

Young pulled off a kick return which hardly ever comes off, and a great run from dummy-half found Dalgleish crossing the line.

The Outlaws could have closed the game when they were up 22-18 in the final seven or eight minutes but coming out of their half, they again made mistakes.

Zipf said standouts were Young, Dalgleish and debut Sunshine Coast Falcons player Jordan Ryan.

Nambour is a physical side and its forwards were too hard to hold out when close to the line, Zipf said.

The Outlaws were lucky to secure conversion points; an advantage that kept them ahead of Nambour.

The players were disappointed knowing they did not play well but again avoided a loss.

The team will have plenty of time to work on its game plan with a bye this week before taking on Kawana at Kawana the following weekend.

The break will suit injured players Danny McMah, out with a groin injury and Ben Ashford with a knee injury.
