In the quest to claim the inaugural Commonwealth Games gold for Women’s Rugby 7’s, the Australian Women’s Rugby 7’s team have announced the Sunshine Coast as their pre-Games training destination.

The reigning Olympic Games gold medallists will arrive at their Caloundra base following the official Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, and will train at the Sunshine Coast Stadium from April 5-11, 2018.

The Women’s Rugby 7’s competition is in the second week of the Games.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the announcement by the Australian Women’s Rugby 7’s team added to a number of overseas nations that have chosen the high-quality facilities in our region for their pre-Games training base.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the team to the Sunshine Coast in the lead-up to such a significant competition, and we wish them all the best in their hopes of winning gold to match their Olympic success,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Their profile grew enormously during and after the Rio Games and I’m sure their matches will be a highlight of the Gold Coast Games.

“It’s no surprise that teams like the Australian Women’s Rugby 7’s team are choosing the Sunshine Coast.

“We’re continuing to add to our wide range of national and international standard training facilities for 32 different sport disciplines which is making sure we are recognised as one of Australia’s premier sports training destinations.

“This has led to a number of major and international sporting events and teams utilising the high-calibre sporting facilities we have here, including Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and Nuie during the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games.”

Tourism, Sports and Events Portfolio Cr Jason O’Pray said sport and fitness were an important part of the lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast, as well as playing an important part in supporting our regional economy.

“The sport and fitness industry generates more than $440 million in economic activity each year and is a contributor to one of the seven high-value industries identified in the Regional Economic Development Strategy,” Cr O’Pray said.

Australian Women’s Rugby 7’s team Head Coach Tim Walsh said the Sunshine Coast offered fantastic training facilities that will give the team an ideal preparation ahead of the first Women’s Rugby 7’s Commonwealth Games tournament.

“Sunshine Coast Stadium is an amazing facility and will allow us to put the final touches on our campaign before we take on the best rugby nations from across the world,” Mr Walsh said.

“We are really looking forward to staying in Caloundra for the final stages of our Gold Coast Commonwealth Games preparation next year.”

A ‘community get active and involved’ session will be held during the team’s visit with the opportunity for the community to get up-close with the players. These details are yet to be confirmed, and will be provided prior to the event.
